Electric Picnic: Saturday 03rd September

The Arcade Fire, headlining, but are they a headliner?

Saturday 03rd September

Trinity Orchestra Daft Punk
Mainstage, 12:30 - 1:15

Flake out on the grass and listen to the Trinity Orchestra playing Daft Punk tracks. One for the stoners.

Honourable mention: Bitches With Wolves, Electric Arena, if you want a buzzy start to the day.

Le Galaxie
Crawdaddy Stage, 1:30 - 2:00

An electo-pop Irish band with an excellent live reputation. This one will depend on the size of the crowd, but hopefully their loyal followers will show up to create an atmosphere. It could well be the daytime gig of the festival if they do.

Honourable Mention: Rarely Seen Above Ground, Crawdaddy Stage, 1:30 - 2:00. One man band from Kilkenny. Well worth a look.

I Am Kloot
Cosby Stage, 2:30 – 3:15

A pretty ‘meh’ band to be honest. Light, indie rock with a few catchy tunes so a decent way to get over the afternoon hump.

Honourable mention: Body & Soul Arena. If I get lost, this is where I end up, and then end up staying – go in, flake out and prepare for the night.

The Undertones
Crawdaddy Stage, 4:00 – 4:45

Okay okay, you’re only going to hear one song but that’s what festivals are about, right?

Honourable Mention: The Rubberbandits, Electric Arena – if you think they’re funny, you’re wrong, but for some reason a lot of people agree with you.

Jape
Electric Arena, 5:15 – 6:15

On my extensive research on what was on at this time (I listened to one song) these were the best. A mixture between laid back chill-out electronica and upbeat electronica. So just remember ‘electronica’ basically.

Honourable Mention: Your tent. This is a good time to go back and re-fuel (what type of fuel is entirely up to you).

James Blake
Mainstage, 6:45 – 7:30

One for the ladies, this one. This impossibly handsome man with the impossibly good voice also has some excellent tunes. Fucker.

Honourable Mention: Russ Chimes, Bacardi. Much like every other DJ in the Bacardi Arena, he plays music that you can dance to.

Lykke Li
Mainstage, 8:15 – 9:15

Should really be in a more intimate setting and is likely to get swallowed by the space but, if she can keep it upbeat, this could a real surprise.

Honourable Mention: The Transformation Blues Band, the Salty Dog Stage. A bit of blues in the woods as the sun goes down is rarely a bad option.

Arcade Fire
Mainstage, 10:00 – 11:15

Having been privileged enough to have seen their epic performance at Electric Picnic a couple of years ago, I’ve been sorely disappointed with Arcade Fire ever since. Does their sound translate to a main stage at a festival? I’m not sure, but this video has gone a long way in convincing me that they can.

Honourable Mention: Retarded Cop, Crawdaddy Stage. Could be the Arcade Fire event of this year. Manically upbeat.

Public Enemy
Electric Arena, 10:45 – 12:00

Having stood at the main stage in the pissins of rain for five hours, head into the Electric Arena and try out your hip-hop moves. Play careful and remember, watching an Irish person dancing to hip-hop is akin to watching a gerbil furiously masturbating.

Honourable Mention: Arcadia. God I hate that place, but if you like it, I’d rather you were over there with the other gombeens watching oiled up men throwing electricity at each other than beside me watching my masturbating gerbil impression.

Chemical Brothers
Mainstage, 12:00 – 02:00

Always put on a decent show, just hope they aren’t doing a DJ set. When you have great tunes, why play other peoples?

Honourable Mention: The Walkmen, Cosby Stage, 01:00 – 02:00. Like if Bob Dylan only 'went electric' now, but in a good way.
